independence
The sky explodes into a phosphor flag;
Stars and stripes forever
In your head and on your back
In the name of science and liberty.

Cola sticky hands wave banners,
Spread beer and mustard
Along the river walk.
Luminous waves

Remind you of the way
She danced, suburban
Carpet groove, free
As you wished you could be.

Remember, drunk and slouched on the
Couch with her, laughing at the ceiling
Trim and matching chairs.

Remember her heavy lids and
Fingers that touched your hair.

Remember the moment she was led
Upstairs; you were too gone to feel regret.

Jolted by a rifle salute to truths intangible,
Your dry brain births a revelation
You can taste: salt and cinnamon
Never again.

Neon varicose clouds flash
In time to the pulse in
Your temple as you watch
Smoke fall to the concrete,
A mushroom halo.
